History

CBCC has treated thousands of patients since we first opened. We have continually expanded and have earned the recognition as the largest free standing, privately held cancer center in the nation.

During our evolution, some of our major milestones are listed below.

when Dr. Ravi Patel opened a 1200 square foot cancer clinic to bring his vision of providing cancer patients with specialized medical and emotional care to Bakersfield. From the very beginning our purpose has been the same – we believe you shouldn’t have to travel for state-of-the-art cancer care.

Our office expanded into a 3,500-square foot office with 14 stations and a staff of 14.

We began participating in our first clinical trials.

It was in this year that our name Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center was introduced. In 1996, CBCC also became affiliated with the UCLA Community Research network.

We again responded to the needs of our patients by hiring our first non-oncology specialist. That same year, construction began on CBCC's brand new 28,000 square foot cancer center at its current location on Truxtun Avenue.

When construction was completed, the new center was opened, offering a full-service laboratory and CT scans that were able to be performed on site. For the first time, CBCC was truly a "comprehensive" cancer center designed to provide maximum patient comfort and convenience.

Over the past few years, CBCC continued to expand at a rapid pace. More specialists, oncologists and hematologists were brought on staff, and as technology improved, CBCC took full advantage, investing heavily in cutting edge services. CBCC began offering PET and PET-CT scans, radiation treatments, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy [IMRT], Brachytherapy and Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Magnetic Resonance Imaging [MRI] scans, Dexascan, Ultrasounds, and more. We also began offering patient and community education, genetic counseling, social services, occupational therapy, nutritional counseling, nuclear medicine, clinical laboratory services, pathology, and patient and family support groups.

CBCC acquired its first satellite facility, Radiation Therapy Associates.

CBCC again finished construction on its most ambitious expansion to date. Now a 70,000-square foot facility, we became the largest free-standing cancer center on the west coast, including The CBCC Breast Center, The CBCC Skin Cancer, Dermatology and Laser Center, and much more.

CBCC broke ground on campus for a brand-new center—The CBCC CyberKnife® Center, home of the CyberKnife® System, the first and only robotic radiosurgery system, and the only one in the world located at a free-standing cancer center. The CyberKnife® delivers high doses of radiation to tumors with unprecedented accuracy and precision, allowing us to now treat patients with once inoperable tumors.

We continued to invest in the best technology and treatment options by acquiring a HDXT MRI, which is primarily used for breast cancer diagnosis and reduces patient discomfort with increased precision. We also added more Mind-Body Medicine components to our treatment options.

CBCC announces its partnership to outsmart cancer alongside Dignity Health.

The Women’s Breast Center at CBCC was opened as the first comprehensive breast center in the area focused on the specific needs on women with breast cancer. The Breast Center allowed women, for the first time, to receive all the facets of diagnoses and treatment under one roof.

In yet another expansion, we added 14,000 square feet to the existing campus faculty to house additional offices to support the growing clinical operations. The Health and Wellness Café also joined the CBCC campus to offer the Bakersfield community a healthy and wholesome restaurant choice.
