About CBCC

We’re Committed to Outsmarting Cancer

At CBCC, we use the latest therapies and techniques to not only diagnose and treat your cancer, but to also optimize your quality of life throughout treatment. A skilled healthcare team will work hand in hand with you and your family to develop your treatment plan. The team will take the time to help you understand the advantages and disadvantages of your treatment options and help you choose one that aligns with your personal preferences. Once treatment has begun, our team will be by your side to support your physical and spiritual well-being.

Our medical oncologists, radiation therapists, oncology nurses, social workers, dietitians, and other health professionals will educate you about your illness and offer important resources to help you make informed decisions.

How We Outsmart Cancer

Genomics
Advanced genomic testing is designed to help identify DNA alterations that may be driving the growth of a specific tumor. Identification of genomic mutations that are unique to your individual cancer may help doctors identify treatments designed to target those mutations.

Doctors may recommend these tests to patients whose cancer did not adequately respond to a treatment plan prescribed for their tumor, whether it was a particular chemotherapy regimen, radiation and/or surgery. The tests may also be appropriate for patients with certain rare cancers or other unusual circumstances.

Whether genomic testing is right for you is a decision you and our team will make together based on your individual situation.

Dignity Health Partnership

We know the power and impact a committed team can have on the outcome of treatment. That is why we have partnered with one of the strongest health care systems in the country—Dignity Health®—so that together we can offer this community an unsurpassed level of cancer care.

Genetic Testing & Counseling
CBCC understands that in many cases, cancer is a genetic disease. It can be caused by certain changes to your genes that alter the way your cells function, grow, and divide. Because of this, family history is extremely important in assessing your risk of developing cancer. Inherited genetic mutations may play a role in as many as 10% of all cancer cases. Genetic tests for hereditary cancer syndromes can identify these mutations early to increase your chances of survival.

At CBCC, our genetic counselors provide comprehensive genetic risk assessment services, helping you understand the potential hereditary risks facing you and your family members.

Targeted Therapy
Targeted therapy is an innovative cancer treatment type that destroys tumors with exceptional precision. While other treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, damage healthy cells along with cancerous ones, targeted therapies only interfere with cells that have specific molecular characteristics, reducing the risk of damaging healthy cells.

Targeted therapies have the unique ability to find cells that have specific proteins while leaving most noncancerous cells unaffected. Because fewer healthy cells are damaged by targeted therapies, these treatments tend to cause fewer side effects than standard cancer treatments.

At CBCC, our expert oncologists can review a patient’s specific diagnosis and cellular pathology reports to determine if targeted therapy might be an appropriate option.

Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy is an innovative cancer treatment that harnesses certain components of a patient’s immune system to fight cancer. This can be done by stimulating the patient’s immune system to target cancer cells or by introducing man-made immune system proteins and other elements into the patient’s body.

Immunotherapy has proven more successful in treating certain types of cancer than others. However, new forms of immunotherapy are being researched every day and will continue to impact the way we approach cancer treatment moving forward.

Tumor Board

We have found that the most effective treatment begins with a clear understanding of the case, and a thorough review of all the options. At CBCC we believe the best way to accomplish this is through case review by a multidisciplinary team of physicians. This means that treatment plans are developed based on the knowledge, expertise, and experience of a highly-skilled team of physicians specializing in cancer treatment. Our team meets four times a month to ensure that you are receiving the best possible treatment.

Dr. Ravi Patel, founded  CBCC in 1984

CBCC is proud to be the only Central Valley cancer center selected as a research site by the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center TRIO-US. As part of the TRIO-US network, CBCC patients can participate in clinical trials brought to us by the UCLA Clinical Research Unit. Since 1995, this partnership has provided our patients with early access to the most promising, lifesaving clinical trials in the world.

Our dedication to excellence and commitment to research earned CBCC this prestigious designation and allows us to offer the additional benefits of a leading academic cancer center to our patients here at home.

Our commitment to excellence has not only impacted the lives of thousands of patients but has also captured the attention of national associations earning us prestigious accreditations and awards.

We are proud of these accreditations and awards. It is confirmation of what our patients and their families have always known — that patient care is always our top priority and that CBCC is always working to outsmart cancer.

American College of Radiation (ACR)

The ACR has a rigorous set of independent standards for patient safety and top quality care, with only 10 percent of the nation's radiation oncology centers having successfully passed the evaluation. We are very proud to have received this prestigious ACR Accreditation.

Michelle Harp

Lung Cancer

Michelle Haarp’s lung cancer was revealed in an X-ray from her primary care physician. After the needle biopsy, she quickly went in for surgery, and removed the upper left portion of her effected lung.

The next step was to continue with chemotherapy. She wanted to do it at UCLA, until they told her she had one of the top facilities in nation nearby her home in Bakersfield.
